Following My First Passion
When I started college, I was convinced that music would be my future. Piano had been one of the most important parts of my life for many years. I spent countless hours practicing, performing, and working to improve my skills. Music challenged me, inspired me, and gave me a strong sense of purpose. Because of that passion, I chose to attend Baylor University and pursue a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance.
My years as a music student were rewarding and demanding. Every performance required preparation, focus, and attention to detail. I learned that success in music does not come from talent alone. It comes from consistent effort over a long period of time. There were days when practice felt exciting and days when it felt exhausting, but I learned to keep going regardless of how I felt. Looking back, those lessons became some of the most valuable lessons of my life.
Facing a Difficult Reality
As graduation approached, I began thinking seriously about my future. I loved music, but I also had to consider what life would look like after college. The professional music world is extremely competitive, and only a small percentage of musicians are able to build stable careers as performers.
At some point, I had to be honest with myself. While I enjoyed playing piano and appreciated the education I was receiving, I realized that pursuing music as a full-time career might not be the best fit for me. This was not an easy conclusion to reach. After investing years into studying music, changing directions felt intimidating.
For a while, I struggled with that decision. I wondered if I was giving up on a dream. I worried about what others might think. Most importantly, I questioned whether I was making the right choice. Looking back now, I understand that changing course was not a sign of failure. It was a sign of maturity. Sometimes the hardest decisions are also the most necessary ones.
Discovering Pharmacy
As I explored different career options, healthcare caught my attention. I had always enjoyed learning and challenging myself academically. I was particularly interested in science and medicine. Pharmacy seemed like a profession that combined intellectual challenge with the opportunity to help people.
The more I learned about pharmacy, the more interested I became. Pharmacists play an important role in patient care. They help ensure medications are used safely and effectively. They solve problems, educate patients, and work closely with other healthcare professionals. I saw a career that offered stability, purpose, and opportunities for continuous learning.
After much thought and prayer, I decided to pursue pharmacy. It was a major change, but it felt like the right decision.
Starting Over
Beginning a new academic path was both exciting and challenging. I went from studying music theory, piano literature, and performance to studying chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences. The subjects were very different, and there were times when the transition felt overwhelming.
Starting over in a new field can be humbling. In music, I had years of experience and confidence. In science, I was learning many concepts for the first time. There were moments when I doubted myself and wondered whether I could succeed.
Fortunately, I soon discovered that many of the skills I developed as a musician transferred directly into my new field. The discipline required to practice piano helped me stay focused during long study sessions. The patience required to master difficult musical pieces helped me work through challenging scientific concepts. The perseverance I learned through years of practice became one of my greatest strengths.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that skills are often more transferable than people realize. At first glance, music and pharmacy seem completely unrelated. However, both require dedication, attention to detail, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
I also learned the importance of being flexible. Many people assume they need to have their entire future figured out at a young age. My experience taught me that life does not always follow the plans we create. Sometimes new opportunities appear, and sometimes our goals change as we grow. Being willing to adapt can open doors that we never expected.
Another lesson involved how I define success. Earlier in life, I often measured success through accomplishments, grades, and professional achievements. While those things can be meaningful, I now believe success is more about growth. Success is becoming a better person, learning from challenges, and continuing to move forward even when the path is uncertain.
Keeping Music in My Life
Although I chose not to pursue music professionally, music remains an important part of who I am. I still enjoy playing piano and participating in church music. My music degree was not wasted simply because I chose a different career. The experiences, friendships, and lessons from those years continue to influence my life today.
I think many people believe that if they do not turn a passion into a career, then that passion somehow loses its value. I disagree. Some of the most meaningful activities in life do not need to generate income or become professions. They enrich our lives simply because we enjoy them.
Looking Back
Today, I am grateful for both chapters of my journey. Music helped shape my character and taught me discipline. Pharmacy provided a profession that aligns with my strengths and allows me to serve others in meaningful ways.
If someone asked me whether changing career paths was the right decision, my answer would be yes. The transition was difficult at times, but it helped me grow in ways I never expected. It taught me humility, perseverance, and adaptability.
Most importantly, it taught me that our careers do not define our worth. What matters most is how we grow, how we treat others, and how we use our abilities to make a positive impact. My path from piano performance to pharmacy may not have been the path I originally planned, but it has been exactly the journey I needed.
